4 Social Media Trends to Watch for in 2022

December 13, 2021

Throughout 2021 we watched the landscape of social media change and shift, and last week we talked about some of these top trends that emerged throughout this past year. Looking forward to the new year, here are some of the top social media trends that we are predicting for 2022 and how you can stay ahead of the game!

1. Short-Form Videos

During both 2020 and 2021, we witnessed major growth of the newest social media app, TikTok, which specializes in short-form video content. During this rise, Instagram also released their own version of short-form video content, Reels. Users are now looking to take in as much information as possible in the shortest amount of time, so in 2022 we can expect to see this type of content continue to grow as more businesses begin to explore TikTok and create more Reels.

2. Personal/Real-Life Marketing

The world of glamorous influencers and their extravagant lifestyles could soon come to a close. Users are starting to become less trusting of these types of influencers and any promotions they are a part of, as their everyday lives are starting to feel so far distant from the audience that they’re trying to reach. In 2022 we will still see a similar type of influencer marketing since audiences greatly trust the opinion of their peers, but this new landscape of influencer marketing will be filled with content creators living almost “normal” lives that look very similar to the audience that the brand is attempting to reach.

3. Digital Accessibility

In 2021 we saw an increase of social media users asking apps for more accessibility features, such as captions on videos. In response, these social apps created easy-to-use caption features for video content. Over the past year, many studies have been conducted relating to how the use of accessibility features, such as video captioning and image descriptions, can increase how well a post performs online. In 2022 we can look forward to seeing more digital accessibility resources becoming more popular and easier to use.

4. Shopping on Social Apps

2020 and 2021 introduced everyone to the world of faster online shopping and apps have already begun developing ways for users to purchase an item without even having to leave the app. In 2022 we can look forward to seeing more small businesses increase their in-app sales using the features being added to apps like Instagram and Pinterest.
