High-Energy Summer Camp Moves from On-Campus to Online

The summer camp for high school journalism students is in it’s 10th year and wasn’t ready to lose momentum – even with campus closings for COVID-19 safety precautions. So, they moved online and our team made it happen.

Students jump in with hands-on projects and exchange ideas and project work with other classmates, even online. Students and advisers choose a single-track to immerse themselves in for four live days of events with instructors and camp staff, then keep access to materials through September 1. Our team used Kajabi to set up the learning tracks for 12 courses and a number of bonus materials for the students. We implemented an aggressive email marketing strategy and social media campaign along with a strategy to convert existing campers to the online attendees.

We flipped the branding from in-person to online within a week and launched the new platform for the campers over a matter of two weeks for smooth sign up. Using free mini-lessons provided by one of the sponsors (Drake University), we generated 600+ leads and have 150 campers and climbing. Live events, recorded videos and video production are all in the works in June to support the camp. We launched a podcast and created new opportunities for students across the country–and internationally–to be a part of Media Now for the 2020 season.
